UNICORN THEATRE

 Technician (Lead Lighting) 

We’re looking for a proactive, multi-skilled technician with the ability to work across all disciplines with a bias in lighting. You will work as part of the Technical Department, servicing the technical requirements of all work presented by the Unicorn Theatre including productions, engagement (schools and community) projects, venue hires and events. Our schedule is principally based around daytime shows for our young audiences.

This will include the operation of productions to a consistently high standard – maintaining the integrity of the production, first line maintenance of technical equipment, show-related maintenance and housekeeping anywhere within the Unicorn Theatre and on tour.

About you

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategic  

• Contribution as appropriate to achievement by the Technical team of customer service  targets and standards. 

• Support the Building & Technical Manager in the development and implementation of  new ways of working, so as to better achieve Beck Theatre and Trafalgar business and  services objectives and targets. 

Operations 

• Technical contribution as required in stage, lighting, sound and projection for get-ins, fit ups, rehearsals, performances and get-outs, in line with Beck Theatre house rules,  policies and practices.  

• Completion of all in-house periodic tests, inspections, preventative maintenance and  record findings. These will include (but are not restricted to) fire checks, water checks,  PAT Testing, safety checks, first aid checks, auditorium seating checks. 

• Execution of any reactive maintenance of the venue, to include (but not restricted to)  lamp rounds, repair of fixtures and fittings and general maintenance. 

• Maintenance of stage, lighting, sound, plant and other equipment as required. Including  fault diagnosis and repair. 

• To be a designated key holder and to undertake and ensure the safety and security of  the building as required. 

• As required by the Building and Technical Manager and/or Senior Technicians, or in their  absence, communication with and collaboration with production company personnel  during the period of engagement, so as to support fully Beck Theatre’s business and  service targets, including cost-effective use of resources. 

• Assist the Senior Technicians with the keeping of records of maintenance work and  stock checks, so as to ensure that stock levels are appropriate and monitored; 

• Supervision of all work experience placements, including but not limited to, annual  intake, (in liaison with other departments) participants weekly schedule, health & safety  induction and any relevant correspondence. 

• To assist the Hospitality team with technical support for their events and functions as  required.  

Health & Safety 

• Adherence at all times to Beck Theatre Health and Safety at Work requirements, rules  and regulations, so as to ensure a duty of care to colleagues and to others working at  Beck Theatre, as well as to proper care of self. 

• Acting, when required, as Duty Stage Manager/Fire Officer during performances  ensuring the safety of performers, staff and patrons.

Recruitment, Training and Development 

• Undertake training and development relevant to the successful execution of the job  role. 

Other Responsibilities 

• Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with departmental and company Health &  Safety procedures 

• Dress in accordance with Company uniform policy and wear protective clothing as issued, if  applicable.

The purpose of the role

The Senior Sound & Video Technician (BECTU Grade 3B) is a hands-on, operational role working directly on performances, based within the NT Sound & Video department.

You will play a key role in the production process undertaking roles such as sound programmer/operator, radio mic supervision/running, support technician; providing specialist technical services to a consistent and high standard.

Working with and without supervision, supervising and mentoring other technicians. Providing support for Sound & Video Technicians (3A). Initiating, planning and taking responsibility for projects and activities within Sound & Video Department operations. Delivering informal training and passing on skills.

 

The successful candidate will have the following: 

  • Previous experience as a sound technician within a repertory theatre or other live performance environment.

  • Previous experience installing, programming, operating, and supporting complex digital audio systems, networks and equipment.

  • Significant experience of the programming and operation of digital sound consoles and playback software and/or significant experience of backstage sound craft including radio mic fitting/running and monitoring.

  • Experience supporting productions in development, rehearsal, and repertoire, contributing proactively to the creative development process.

  • A practical knowledge of relevant Health & Safety standards including but not limited to BS7909, BS7671, Noise at Work, LOLER and PUWER and risk assessment regulations.

Oily Cart are looking for an experienced stage manager to join us on our tour of When the World Turns/Great Big Tiny World (https://oilycart.org.uk/shows/when-the-world-turns/). The Stage Manager will have the support of an Assistant Stage Manager during rehearsals and on tour. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY TASKS

  1. To stage manage the production in rehearsal and on tour, liaising with venues, accommodation and Oily Cart artistic and administrative teams.

  2. To maintain ‘the Book’ during rehearsals, prepare summary reports each day during the rehearsal period and to prepare and update the props list.

  3. To undertake production-related tasks during the rehearsal period as directed by the Director, and participate in meetings and minute them as required throughout the contract.

  4. Operating the lighting via a ETC nomad dongle connected to a Mac Laptop 

  5. To set up the sound system 

  6. To take responsibility for the driving a van (either Luton or Iveco), to co-ordinate the sharing of driving and to be responsible for regular maintenance, cleaning, repairs and fuelling of the company vehicle.

  7. To undertake and co-ordinate get-in and get-outs of the show and to stage manage during performances, undertaking technical duties as required.

  8. To participate in plant care (the show tours 360 live plants) alongside the horticulturalist on tour and the rest of the cast 

  9. To work in costume and interact with audience (training will be given).

  10. To write daily show reports and circulate them to the performing and artistic team.

  11. To organise, or undertake repairs and laundry/dry cleaning of props, set and costumes as required.

  12. To ensure that cast members get enough breaks in line with Equity rules, keep track of time sheets and liaise with the TOURING PRODUCER and ACCESS OFFICER regarding company welfare. 

IN REHEARSAL

  1. Maintain ‘the Book’.

  2. Prepare daily summaries of actions decided in the rehearsal room and ensure that these are distributed to the Director, the Design team, the Executive Director and the Production Manager.

  3. To prepare and maintain the props list for the production, and ensure that this is regularly distributed to the Director, the Design team, the Executive Director, the Production Manager.

  4. Ensure that the rehearsal location is safe and ready for visiting preview/try-out audiences 

  5. To ensure that the rehearsal space is kept in a clean & tidy state.

TOUR MANAGEMENT

  1. To liaise with the Oily Cart Touring Producer and the Artistic Team before the tour, checking venue, geographical, and contractual details.

  2. To ensure all technical information received from venues is adequate. To gather further information whenever necessary and to contact each venue at least two weeks ahead of the performance date to confirm all touring, staffing and technical details. 

  3. To be in charge of the technical running of performances including lighting, sound and special effects, and of all get-ins and get-outs, including initial liaison on arrival at a new venue. 

  4. To ensure that the set, costumes and technical equipment on tour are maintained to the highest standard, requesting support from the Production Manager if necessary.

  5. In liaison with the Administration team, to ensure each venue is provided with relevant educational and publicity materials as required.

  6. To manage the Stage Management float, returning VAT receipts and claim forms to the Production Manager on a regular basis.

  7. To be responsible for arranging all repairs, maintenance, laundry and cleaning on the road, liaising with the production team as necessary.  In particular to ensure all technical equipment is operated under safe conditions.  To ensure all items on tour are clearly marked "Oily Cart" and are entered in a detailed inventory.

  8. To have knowledge and awareness of health & safety issues on tour and to comply with all current legislation and recommended precautions.

  9. To liaise closely with venue staff and young people about the medical and mobility needs of each audience member attending the show

  10. To manage the return of set, costume and props to our storage unit at the end of the contract.    

VEHICLE MANAGEMENT

  1. To ensure that company vehicles are maintained in a safe and legal condition.

  2. To ensure that the vehicle(s) is kept clean internally and externally – arriving at venues in good order.

  3. To ensure the vehicle is properly alarmed and secured whenever unattended.

  4. To check the weight of the van and avoid routes not usable for the vehicles weight and size. 

  5. To ensure the vans are parked legally and safely at all times.   

  6. To undertake and log daily and weekly maintenance checks on the company vehicle, ensuring maximum safety, road-worthiness and cleanliness.

MONITORING AND FEEDBACK

  1. To ensure each audience member at public shows are encouraged to feedback about the show.

  2. To ensure that audience feedback forms are available at each manger performance.

  3. To complete, collate and return daily show reports, accommodation and venue reports to the team 

  4. To be in touch with the Oily Cart office at least twice a week to report on the tour.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  1. Experience of stage managing small and mid-scale national tours.

  2. An ability to set up a sound system for 5 speakers and 2 amps

  3. An understanding on how to operate Qlab/Nomad and ability to update the programme after each venue residency 

  4. Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

  5. Excellent interpersonal skills

  6. Calm and kind – happy to work with disabled young people with the most barriers to access 

  7. A clean driving licence

  8. Be able to work closely and interact with an audience.

  9. An Enhanced DBS check

Highly desirable

  1. An enthusiasm for and interest in theatre for children and young people.

FRONT LINE LAMBETH

Applications are now open for Front Line Lambeth, which offers paid placements in Front of House and hospitality teams for young people aged 16-30, who live, work or study in Lambeth. We are partnering with other Lambeth based organisations to deliver this exciting project including: Black Cultural Archives, Garden Museum, Migration Museum, National Theatre, Southbank Centre and Streatham Space Project. 

Front Line Lambeth is perfect for young people who want to explore a career in theatre or hospitality but aren’t sure of their next steps or are interested in learning transferable skills through front of house work. No experience is necessary, and we particularly welcome applications from anyone not in education, employment or training.    

  Participants will:   

  • take part in an induction workshop with Old Vic staff to prepare for work    

  • see an Old Vic production  

  • complete four shifts shadowing various roles in our FOH teams or with one of our partner organisations. Shifts are paid at London Living Wage and are organised around participant's schedules.    

  • take part in a next steps workshop focusing on their future goals, including CV writing and interview skills, and will also include an opportunity to network with the other Lambeth-based organisations taking part in the scheme.
